PASSION, EMPATHY AND PROVEN SUCCESS
You’re living with pain or mobility issues due to Scoliosis or other postural problems, and you’ve tried everything but haven’t found relief.
I'VE BEEN THERE...
In 1996, I was diagnosed with a thoracolumbar scoliosis—a 42-degree curve in my spine. A year later I was re-measured with a 45-degree curve.
I consulted with my family doctor and a surgeon who both explained that surgery was the only effective treatment for stopping the progression of the curvature. I didn’t want my spine to continue to curve, but the idea of undergoing surgery was extremely worrying.
Scoliosis surgery results in large sections of the spine being permanently fused.
Often rods are drilled into the vertebrae along the spine to support the fusion. Scoliosis surgery can lead to degeneration of the bones that have been fused and has a history of needing revision surgeries to reinforce the vertebrae that have been damaged by previous surgeries.
Knowing that I didn’t want to have surgery, I had to look for other means of stopping the progression of my scoliosis. I spent many years of education, research, training and experience in posture, movement, exercise methods and physical rehabilitation that has resulted in the development of my own system for treating scoliosis—the Lyons Structural Therapy approach.
IN 2011, I WAS MEASURED WITH 27-DEGREE SCOLIOSIS—THAT’S AN IMPROVEMENT OF 20 DEGREES, A CHANGE CONSIDERED BY MOST DOCTORS AND SURGEONS TO BE IMPOSSIBLE.
The Lyons Structural Therapy approach is the result of my certification as a teacher of the Alexander Technique, the foundation of my work. I received my training at the Alexander Alliance in Philadelphia and at the Toronto School of The Alexander Technique. I am also a certified practitioner of Ida Rolf's method of Structural Integration, a powerful massage approach to create improved balance and organization in the body. I received my training at the Rolf Institute and the Guild for Structural Integration.
My long term study of many movement practices are incorporated into the ways in which I help my patients, including Hatha Yoga, Yang-style Tai Chi, the Feldenkrais Method and Pilates. As a certified Personal Fitness Trainer, I also utilize the use of weightlifting equipment for therapeutic purposes.
My personal experience, education, and training brings a deeper level of understanding and empathy to my practice, which helps each and every one of my patients to relieve pain, regain lost mobility and live healthy, active lives.
